Darkness into Light Walk in aid of Suicide Prevention
Enniscorthy has been chosen as one of the venues around the country to host the Pieta House Annual 5K Fundraising Darkness into Light Walk in aid of Suicide Prevention.
Darkness into Light is a unique event which begins at 4am on Saturday 11th May when thousands of people will gather in darkness at 20 locations around Ireland and walk or run the 5K route as dawn is breaking.
Darkness into Light represents hope and solidarity and is symbolic of the work being done to bring people from darkness back into light. Pieta House want to make 2013 the year that they halt the rise of suicide in Ireland and founder and CEO Joan Freeman says that they are pulling out all the stops to make that happen.
Pieta House will open 4 new Crisis Centres this year in counties Cork, Galway, Tipperary and Kerry and will be launching a major new nationwide campaign in the coming weeks aimed at reducing the rate of young male suicides.
Because of our involvement with young people in the town of Enniscorthy and in particular with young males both Shamrocks and Rapparees/Starlights GAA Clubs were more than willing when approached by Pieta to join forces and put their backs behind this wonderful endeavour and do their utmost to make it a resounding success.
Almost all GAA clubs in the county have been touched by suicide and anything that we can do to impede the increase of this most tragic malady will be worth it.

As you are probably aware myself and Pat are co-founders of the charity “talk to tom” which is a suicide awareness and prevention charity based in Gorey but servicing all our local areas.
It is a completely voluntary organisation with all monies generated going into counselling etc for people who need it.
We are holding an information evening in the next 2/3 weeks in Carnew to let you all know exactly who we are and what services etc are available…THIS IS AN ADULT ONLY info night and from there we can go into schools/clubs to speak to teenagers etc if we are invited.
I will get back to you in due course with date and venue, but we are hopeful that a large crowd would turn out so as to make it more known of the services we provide.
Please feel free to spread the word to any adult.

Table Quiz for Console
Console.ie and their help
ACE (Askamore Community Education) had Denis O’Connor from Console to talk locally about suicide, how we as a community can watch out for signs of ill-health among our neighbours and friends and how we can all try to improve our positive mental health.
One of the very strong messages that Denis got across on the night was that Console offer a dedicated suicide helpline, which as its number implies, is available 24/7.
This number is 1800 247 100.
If anyone would like to contact Denis personally, his email is denis@console.ie.
Information on Console’s other services can be found here.
