The Kilrush-Askamore GAA club as presently constituted had its genesis in the winter of 1946-47, when a series of meetings were held to amalgamate three existing clubs in the parish.
As a result, Jack Lancaster, Kiltilly and Aidan Daly, Ballyroebuck, cycled to Gorey to register the team for the 1947 Gorey District Junior Football Championship.
The officers of the club around that time were:
Chairman: Mylie Moore
Secretary: Jim White
Treasurer: Aidan Daly
They collected the price of a football, which cost 19 shillings, by levying each player at sixpence per man. Martin O’Neill looked after getting the boots.
Four years later saw the formation of a hurling club, which evolved from a group of hurlers who played in Ryan’s field, Kilrush, each evening after the Mission which was being held that summer. Initially it was known as Kilrush Hurling Club, with Lar Walsh as Chairman, Mark O’Connor as Secretary and Joint Treasurers Martin Ryan (Church) and Martin Gilbert.
By the mid-50s the hurlers played under the banner of Askamore, and the footballers continued to be known as Kilrush, both playing under the umbrella of Kilrush / Askamore GAA Club, as it is to the present day.
