Askamore Tidy Towns

Askamore Community Council & Tidy Towns group would like to thank everyone who got involved with the recent “Keep Wexford Beautiful” Campaign.

The Judge was very impressed with Askamore and we have improved a few points on last years entry.

Please read what the judge had to say about Askamore and if you have any ideas on how we could improve on this for next year, feel free to get in touch with any member of the community council or gardening & Tidy towns group.

In the meantime, don’t forget to pick up your litter, pick up any dog poo and let’s all work together to Keep Askamore Beautiful.

Thank you for the excellent entry form and other material including ordanance type sketch map of this idyllic small village.

The adjudciator notes that the Tidy Towns Committee operates under the umbrella of The Askamore Community Council.

One can empathise with you in relation to attracting volunteers to come on board but one has to admire the manner and method you have used to get people involved in community support your work.

You are wished well with the Meitheal Project, one hopes that you will have extra volunteers to carry the good work that you are doing for the community.

Your methods of communication are a mix of the traditional newsletter to the varying forms of social media plus an excellent web presence.

Links with the local school in Ballyellis NS ,which is actually 3 miles from Askamore, are good and you have taken the right approach in planning activities that suit both your needs.

Thank you for the positive endorsement of the competition and what it has done for your community even allowing for the fact as you state that it doesn’t make your job any easier.

The inclusion of four local looped walks in the Wexford Walking Trail Brochure is major coup for your area and as a walker of modest standing I intend to come back later in the year to do the 4.

Some of the material that you have referenced in this section is from a few years back and tems such as the Lipsync Batttles were referred to in last year’s report.

For the extra inclusions that you have included in this year an extra mark has been awarded.

Streetscape & Public Places / Sráid-Dreach & Áiteanna Poiblí:

The Askamore Hall is one of a number of major projects that have been undertaken by the community.

To achieve something as big as this as well as the wonderful creative Le Cheile Park is such a wonderful achievement for such a small place.

Not sure what the status of Doran’s Project is as there doesn’t seem to be too much evidence of anything major happening.

The new finger posts signs were admired and also they proved to be useful to the adjudicator as it allowed him to find his way out to a number of neighbouring villages.

Local towns lands name stones are becoming popular around the country over the last few years.

The jewel in the crown in Askamore is Le Cheile Park as this is a development that would do justice to a major town let alone a small village in rural Wexford.

Good to see recognition of Muintir Na Tire set up by that man form Bansha all those years ago.

This is an area where you can engage in organic growing, make yourself fit, learn about bio diversity and play indoor chess.

The rest hall which doubles as a chess room is in need of cleaning and a fresh coat of paint.

The RC church and grounds were in fine condition and were being attended to on the day in question.

The graveyard in keeping with many cemeteries in County Wexford was resplendent with colourful flower

The Grotto is one of the best if its type seen by this adjudicator in his travels.

Green Spaces and Landscaping / Spásanna Glasa agus Tírdhreachú:

The landscaping and planting arrangements in the village consisted of hanging baskets and floral arrangements at the aforementioned cemetery and the church

Le Cheile Park has a labyrinth and whilst the ideas was exciting and novel when installed this type of novel amenity is hard to manage.

good to note that you are working on a 3 year plan to restore the labyrinth to former glory and you are wished well with this.

Is ajuga suitable for rural Askamore ?

Certainly the unprecedented hot weather hasn’t helped it.

There were one or two planter troughs that were in need of tending where plants were beginning to wilt.

The Grotto had some nice planting features and was well looked after so well done to the person or persons in the community who look after it.

The adjudciator just felt that the Village was in need additional planting and should consult with the landscaping section of Wexford County Council and indeed with any horticultural enthusiasts that you have on your committee or volunteer core.

The Village has more potential in this category and this adjudicator feels that La Cheile Park is in need of a little make over outside of the labyrinth.

It lacked a little colour or sustainable all year round planting.

Nature and Biodiversity in your Locality / An Dúlra agus an Bhithéagsúlacht i do cheantar:

The key components of this adjudication category are a) knowledge of local species and habitats and knowledge of local designated areas and b) being able to promote the knowledge gained to the local community and the passing visitor in viable formats such as nature information panels

Good wildlife advice and the communication of the importance local wildlife in a community is so important.

Being aware of invasive and possible destructive plants such as Japanese knot weed, is also essential.

Biodiversity as the name suggest is so diverse that it is important for any committee to evaluate its resources to see if they can manage projects that may come on board under this category.

Consultation with the Municipal District gardening and landscaping consultant should have included looking at the possibility of revamping an overall landscaping plan as suggested in previous section.

You as a committee are enthusiastic about the projects you have completed in the last year and those that you have planned for the year and further ahead.

Just make sure that you have the resources to manage the multiplicity of ongoing works that you have on the go.

A couple of locals were digging a few spuds form your gardening boxes on the day.

Is there a donation box ?

The adjudicator was very impressed with your rather large orchard and comment on the apple press is for the next section.

Finally I compliment you on getting involved with All Ireland Pollinator Plan and its objectives.

It’s a startling statement but true to some extent “ If bees die so will we”

Sustainability – Doing more with less / Inmharthanacht – Mórán ar an mbeagán:

The objective in this category has moved on from one of reduce reuse and recycle to one of promoting the concept of reducing the production of potential waste at source such as excessive packaging.

“Doing more with less” is a very apt

The practical benefits of good waste management and control of unnecessary production will be seen as a major contribution to a better environment.

You have listed projects under this category that fall under the above objectives

but some have been replicated around the country especially in the last few years since communities became more familiar with the category objectives.

Last years report suggested that you come up with some new innoavative projects in this category for 2108

Well done on acquiring the apple press and also for attaching the information on how to press apples.

By the way is there a culture of turning tyres into human forms in Wexford as I came across the “Wexford minions” made out of tyres somewhere else.?

Twas a wonder I didn’t see a Davy Fitz tyre effigy

To get more out of this sector in terms of creating even a greater awareness of a more sustainable environment consider looking at the following websites for idea generation , and

Also something that this adjudicator became aware of during last year’s adjudication is the circular economy.

It is a bit too long to explain the concept in detail in this report, but if you access the following you will get a pretty good idea of what it’s all about.

The idea of what is called a linear economy of “take, make and waste” is now being seen as not sustainable and alternatives need to be found.

An increase of one additional mark was merited.

alternatives need to be found.

An increase of one additional mark was merited.

Tidiness and Litter Control / Slachtmhaireacht agus Rialú Bruscair:

Despite all the wonderful National initiatives to counteract the littering problem it still remains out of control in the opinion of this adjudicator.

You have put in place a rota of litter pickers that complement the CE Scheme workers and your efforts have been worthwhile as there was virtually no litter on the day in question even on the outskirts of the village.

The Gardening Group deserve special mention here.

The village which is a rural farming area in reality was tidy in general terms and the new footpath is a major facility for the local population who can walk from Church to Communnity centre and further in safety.

It also makes the village look tidy and complements the efforts that have been made to improve stone walls and paint farm gates in nice black and white combinations.

Theft of signs of unusual place names is getting common enough – so expect to see “Askamore 2 km” in some bar in Boston or as far away as Argentina.

The signs that were noted were clean and visible

As mentioned in another section the little “relaxing chess hall” in Le Cheile Park is in need of a little revamp

An additional mark has been awarded for your commitment to keeping the village litter free by having a well run rota system.

Residential Streets & Housing Areas / Sráideanna Cónaithe & Ceantair Tithíochta:

The Village is actually the main residential core and home owners had their premises in good condition and well presented on the day.

The small housing cluster Waterside Close is nice new development of individual house that were looked after very well by the respective owners.

Asca Rua, as you quite rightly state,is now finally completed and all bar one seem to be sold. These areas will be major contributors to the life of your community in the years ahead. Theses residents will also contribute to your various community activities like Tidy Towns.

Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes / Bóithre Isteach, Sráideanna & Lánaí:

The entrances into this very rural village tucked away of the beaten tracks are acceptable but woe be tide if you get lost trying get to the village from minor roads.

Well done on the entrance daffodil planting programme and to have been able to approach the local farmer and offer to tidy his ditches.

This is what harnessing the good will of the local community is all about.

The car park area at the Church is still very rough but hopefully this might be able to re surfaced

Concluding Remarks:

This was the first time this adjudicator visited Askamore and the experience was more than a pleasant one.

Le Cheile Park is haven of tranquillity and also a place where one can learn about bio diversity, get mad fit and even play chess!

A visit back is on the cards to do the loop walks. You are wished well in the competition in future years.
