U14s are taking part in the Duffry Rovers indoor hurling tournament next Saturday evening. This will take place over the next few weeks. U12 are out Friday night in Castletown for an indoor hurling tournament. Details of both these events will be text to parents.

The Inaugural Sean Walshe Memorial U16s Hurling Tournament will take place in March, featuring four teams including Kilrush Askamore. Two semi-finals will take place on Sunday 4th March, the first match taking place at 10.30am. The Final will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 19th March at 11am.

The Minor team are back training, and their first match will take place on 11th March.

Could all players please ensure that they have paid their registration fee, as if the fee is not paid, the player will not be able to play. This is because the player will not be insured. The registration for the junior club is €10 for one child, and €20 for more two or more children. This is very important.

We have changed the days of the Parent/Toddler meetings to the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month.

There will be no parent and toddler meetings during school holidays eg Easter and summer.

Kilrush Drama Group Festival Play – The Lonesome West

Kilrush Drama Group have once again chosen a Martin McDonagh play as their festival play.

The Lonesome West is written in typical McDonagh style and is one of his funniest plays, coupled of course with some underlying dark and sad moments, all captured excellently by director Mick Byrne.

The Lonesome West is part of McDonagh’s Connemara trilogy, which includes The Beauty Queen of Leenane and A Skull in Connemara. All three plays depict the shocking and murderous goings-on in Leenane, Co. Galway.

The play features the constantly arguing brothers Coleman (played by Michael Dunbar) and Valene, (played by Joe Sinnott) whose father has just died in a shotgun ‘accident.’ Valene is only interested in his religious ornaments, and drinking poteen. Coleman is only interested in eating, and attends funerals to collect free sausage rolls and vol au vents. The other two characters in the play are Fr. Welsh (Brendan Doyle) and Girleen (a young girl played by Ellie Condren) who are frequent visitors at the brothers’ home.

Ger Byrne has taken on the onerous task of stage manager for this production, while Kevin McEvoy will do the lighting. Jacinta Kavanagh is in charge of costumes and Lorna Doran is set to do the makeup.

All four actors in this play have represented Kilrush Drama Group in All-Ireland Drama Finals over the last number of years under the direction of Mick Byrne, so don’t miss their first performance of this year’s production in St. Brigid’s Hall, Carnew on Friday 17^th and Sunday 19^th of February, 2012.

Admission: €10.00 As The Lonesome West is on the Leaving Cert syllabus for this year, there will be a special group rate for groups of over 10 students (booked in advance). Contact Mary on 087 9323990 for further information on this.

Askamore Set Dancers

Wednesday night sees the local set dancing class with Paddy Wade as teacher going from strength to strength. Numbers have gone up to 18 now and last Wednesday saw 2 full sets on the floor – very tiring, but very enjoyable.

New members are coming along all the time, and they are most welcome. at any time.

ACE (Askamore Community Education) had Denis O’Connor from Console to talk locally about suicide, how we as a community can watch out for signs of ill-health among our neighbours and friends and how we can all try to improve our positive mental health.

One of the very strong messages that Denis got across on the night was that Console offer a dedicated suicide helpline, which as its number implies, is available 24/7.

This number is 1800 247 100.

Our newly re-vamped site, askamore.com was launched on Friday, November 25th, as part of Askamore Community Council’s 5-year plan for the area.

The website reached 1000 visitors on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.

Today, February 10th, we have just had our 2000th visitor.

New Jerseys for school

The set of jerseys were recently presented to the school by Ballyellis Parents’ Council.

It features a crest which was designed by Caitlin Black who won the competition held in the school.

Annual Field Day

This will take place this year on Sunday 3rd of June following the patron in Askamore.
